Curriculum for Classes 7 & 8
Summer Term 2010
Our topic this half term is geography based and aims to develop and extend children’s geographical knowledge and skills acquired in previous years. Many of the skills will be developed by looking at countries participating in this year’s World Cup.
Children will continue to develop their knowledge of maps and map skills by:
- locating places on World, European and UK maps
- labelling maps using keys and symbols
- identifying flags
- drawing sketch maps
- using compasses to show direction
If children are involved with fieldwork in and around Milnrow, we will take advantage of nice weather and may go out for a morning or afternoon session without prior notice.
The World Cup offers lots of opportunities for art and design work , e.g. designing flags, kits, mascots etc. In Literacy, we will be making up limericks and clerihews about famous players and we will also be producing non-fiction work, such as diary entries, newspaper pages and research into the history of the World Cup and some of its famous names (past and present).
Our science work is finding out about Living things in their Environment. This will include:
- classifying living things into groups.
- identifying plants in our environment
- using and making a variety of keys to identify living things
- pond dipping activities at Hollingworth Lake
- considering how animals/plants are adapted to their habitat
Children will also be carrying out practical activities to develop their planning and investigative skills.
In numeracy we will be covering work in the following areas:
Numeracy
- Number patterns and sequences
- Square Numbers
- Odd and even numbers (level 5)
- Multiples, factors and prime numbers
- Using number skills to solve problems
Time
- Knowledge of 12 hour & 24 hours clocks
- Time intervals
- Changing one unit of time into another
Data
We will be using the computer to create graphs and charts based on World Cup data. In addition, all children will be involved in groups creating their own Fantasy Football teams. Having set up their team, they will be responsible for carrying out transfers etc, to see whose team is the most successful by the end of the tournament!
