Curriculum for Classes 1 & 2
Summer Term 2010
During this second half of the summer term the children in Miss Crosbie’s and Mrs. Alker’s class will be undertaking a geography based topic.
They will begin by exploring our school building and its surroundings, what they like and dislike about our school grounds and how they might be improved.
The children in Class 1 will also explore their own homes, talk about what kind of house they live in and where it is situated.
The children in Class 2 will have the opportunity to explore the village of Milnrow following simple route maps. They will look at the types of shops there and visit the park. Both classes intend to visit a nearby farm.
Some basic mapping skills will be taught starting by sid views and plan view of objects then moving on to make simple plans or familiar places. We will be looking at world maps with regard to countries participating in The World Cup.
In literacy a range of stories and information books about places, including simple atlases, will be used to reinforce the children’s geographical knowledge and understanding.
In numeracy, reception children will learn to:
- Recite number names to at least 20
- Recognise numbers that are more than, less than
or in between a given set of numbers
- Add by counting on and partition a number of objects into two groups
- Recognise and name some simple 3D shapes
- Subtract by removing a small number of objects from a larger set and by counting back on a number line
Our Year 1 children will learn how to:
- Recognise coins and use addition and subtraction to solve money problems
- Count in twos and recognise odd and even numbers
- Subtract by taking away
- Add near doubles and bridge through 10 when adding
- Revise the names and properties of 3D shapes
- Count on in tens from any small number and subtract 10 from teen numbers

Art activities will be linked to topic work this half term and will include painting pictures of houses, sketching views that can be seen around our school and making models of house and shops.
In addition to local visits, we have organised a trip, for both classes, to Blue Planet Aquarium on Wednesday 14th July. More detailed information about this visit is outlined in a separate letter.
As usual, if you feel you have anything to offer in support of our children’s learning this half term or would like any further information about our activities, please do not hesitate to contact a member of our Early Years staff. You can also look at more of our web site where there is lots of information and pictures of our activities.
